Learn to give commands and instructions in Finnish using the imperative mood. Finnish has different imperative forms for singular (sinä), plural/formal (te), and first person plural (let us). Master both positive commands and negative imperatives with the special älä/älkää forms.
1Singular Imperative (sinä)
The singular imperative is used when giving commands to one person informally. It is formed by taking the verb stem (the first person singular form minus -n). For most verbs, this creates a short, direct command. The subject 'sinä' is not used.

2Plural and Formal Imperative (te)
The plural imperative is used for multiple people or as a formal/polite form. It is formed by adding -kaa/-kää to the verb stem. The vowel harmony rule applies: use -kaa with back vowels (a, o, u) and -kää with front vowels (ä, ö, y).

3Negative Imperative
Negative commands use the special negative auxiliary älä (singular) or älkää (plural) followed by the imperative stem. The main verb does not take the -kaa/-kää ending in plural negative - only älkää carries the plural marker. Adding -ko/-kö creates a softened request.

4First Person Plural (Let us)
The first person plural imperative expresses 'let us do something'. It is formed with the passive present stem plus -kaamme/-käämme (formal) or by using the passive form directly in spoken Finnish. This form includes the speaker in the action.
