1Basic Negation with Não
To negate a sentence in Portuguese, place não directly before the verb. Unlike English, no auxiliary verb is needed. Não is also used to answer 'no' to questions.

2Double Negatives
Portuguese requires double negatives - this is grammatically correct. When using nada (nothing), ninguém (nobody), nunca (never), you must also use não with the verb.

3Negative Word Order
Negative words can come before or after the verb. When they come before, não is optional. When they come after, não is required. This flexibility allows for emphasis.

4Negative Expressions
Common negative expressions include nem (not even, nor), ainda não (not yet), já não (no longer), and de nada (you're welcome, lit. 'of nothing').
