1Formation with Avere
The trapassato prossimo is formed with the imperfect of avere or essere + past participle. Most verbs use avere: avevo, avevi, aveva, avevamo, avevate, avevano + past participle. The past participle doesn't change with avere.

Verbs of motion, state change, and reflexive verbs use essere: ero, eri, era, eravamo, eravate, erano + past participle. The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject. Common essere verbs: andare, venire, partire, arrivare, nascere, morire.
