1Passive with Ser + Past Participle
The formal passive is formed with ser (conjugated) + past participle. The participle agrees in gender and number with the subject. The agent (doer) is introduced by por (by). This construction is common in formal writing, news, and academic texts.

2Reflexive Passive (Se Passivo)
The reflexive passive uses se + verb (3rd person) and is very common in spoken Portuguese. The subject usually comes after the verb. The agent is typically not mentioned. Use singular verb with singular subjects and plural with plural subjects: Vende-se casa / Vendem-se casas.

3Estar + Past Participle (State)
Estar + past participle describes a resulting state, not an action. Compare: A porta foi fechada às cinco (action: someone closed it at 5) vs. A porta estava fechada (state: it was in a closed state). This distinction is important in Portuguese.

4Active vs Passive Transformation
To transform active to passive: the object becomes subject, the verb becomes ser + participle (agreeing with new subject), and the original subject becomes agent with por. Not all verbs work in passive - typically only transitive verbs with direct objects.
