Create complex Polish sentences with subordinate clauses. Learn to use że (that), kiedy/gdy (when), jeśli/jeżeli (if), ponieważ (because), and żeby (in order to). Unlike coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions create dependent clauses that rely on the main clause.
1That-Clauses with Że
Że means 'that' and introduces reported speech, thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. It follows verbs like mówić (say), myśleć (think), wiedzieć (know), and wierzyć (believe). Polish always uses że - it cannot be omitted like 'that' sometimes is in English.

2Time Clauses: Kiedy, Gdy, Zanim
Kiedy and gdy both mean 'when' and are largely interchangeable. Kiedy is more common in speech, gdy in writing. Zanim means 'before', and po tym jak means 'after'. These conjunctions set up the timing of events.

Odkąd tu pracuję, wiele się zmieniło.

3Conditional Clauses: Jeśli, Jeżeli, Gdyby
Jeśli and jeżeli mean 'if' for real conditions. Gdyby means 'if' for unreal/hypothetical situations and uses past tense forms. In real conditions, use present or future tense. The order of clauses is flexible.

4Purpose and Reason: Żeby, Ponieważ
Żeby means 'in order to/so that' and is used for purpose. With different subjects, use żeby + past tense forms. Ponieważ means 'because' (more formal than bo). Dlatego że also means 'because' and emphasizes the reason.
